The traditional role of altars and shrines is to remind oneself of sacred ground. Both can be created around traditional religious themes, or they can focus on very personal ideas of the sacred: a walk in the woods, a visit to the seashore, time spent with a good book. Altar building orients us to the world and reminds us to pause for a moment and to reconnect with what feels important to us.

This workshop will focus on the creation of small altars and shrines made from a variety of boxes and tins. Participants will imagine alternate uses for everyday objects, explore various compositions using everyday items and investigate means of joining elements together to form shrines/altars with personal significance.

Instructor will supply a selection of small tin boxes (such as Altoids) as well as larger bases (similar to cigar box size) made of wood or fiberboard. Participants are welcome to bring any special boxes/tins/items for bases that they may have. Participants may work with any size of base available, may include more than one small tin in the completed altar, and are welcome to create more than one altar if time permits. Instructor will also supply the adhesive and a large assortment of embellishments. Participants are encouraged to bring additional small items (jewelry, buttons, pins, small stones, photos, images, etc) that have personal meaning to add to the altars.

Participants are asked to bring their own snacks and lunch.
