First Thursday: Health & Wellness on the Avenue

   During the September First Thursday, Del Ray highlights the wide variety of health and wellness opportunities in the neighborhood, with the the theme "Health And Wellness On The Avenue." The monthly street festival takes place on Sept. 1 from 6pm to dusk along Mount Vernon Avenue. The event is free and open to all.

    A wide variety of free health and wellness classes and demonstrations will take place, along with a scavenger hunt, live music by The Irish Breakfast Band, children's activities, and more.  Participants are urged to register for the free classes in advance; for registration information, visit

Among the planned activities:

  • Mind the Mat: Free Pilates Boot Camp from 6:45pm to 7:30pm; 2200 block of Mount Vernon Ave.  Register HERE.
  • Ease Yoga:  Outdoor Yoga class -- bring your teen for free with registration! 6:15pm to 7:30pm; 3051 Mount Vernon Ave.  Register HERE
  • Yoga in Daily Life: Yoga Beyond Basics at 6pm, Yoga for all at 7:45pm; 2402 Mount Vernon Ave.
  • Studio Body Logic: Open Level Pilates mat class from 6:15pm to 7:05pm, and free 15-minute Reflexology sessions in front of Studio from 6pm-8pm; 2417 Mount Vernon Ave. Click HERE to register for the Pilates class.

  • Hula Hoop Contest sponsored by the Alexandria Sheriff's Department from 6pm-7pm at the Pat Miller Neighborhood Square, at the intersection of Oxford and Mount Vernon Ave.
  • Golf, Cornhole, & Prizes sponsored by Del Ray Psych; 2200 block of Mount Vernon Ave.
  • Closing Community Meditation by Mind the Mat at 8pm; Pat Miller Neighborhood Square. 

     Participants are urged to bring a new teddy bear; those collected will be distributed to various City organizations -- including the Alexandria Police and Fire Department, local hospitals, and the Alexandria Battered Women's Shelter -- to give to children in crisis.   Donations will be collected at the Pat Miller Neighborhood Square.  

    Held the first Thursday of the month from April to September along Mount Vernon Avenue in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, First Thursday is a series of free outdoor street festivals that bring the community together around a fun theme, benefiting a local nonprofit.  This month’s event is sponsored by the Del Ray Business Association and Mind the Mat Pilates and Yoga.
