Imagine, if you can, a lifetime prison sentence stretching in front of you. No hope of release. Little or no education or life skills to pass the time. Contact  with friends, family, and community slowly dwindling away to nothing.

And then… it all changes.

In 2012, California amended its “Three Strikes” law—one of the harshest criminal sentencing policies in the country. The passage of Prop. 36 marked the first time in U.S. history that citizens voted to shorten sentences of those currently incarcerated. Within days, the reintegration of thousands of “lifers” was underway. THE RETURN, a Tribeca Film Festival award-winning documentary, examines this unprecedented reform through the eyes of those on the front lines—prisoners suddenly released, families turned upside down, reentry providers helping to navigate complex transitions.

Please join us for a screening of THE RETURN, which beautifully depicts one of the greatest challenges for returning citizens: employment. To encourage the private sector to re-think their hiring practices, the creators of THE RETURN have teamed with The Ford Foundation for an employment screening tour. Guest House has worked hard to educate the community about hiring returning citizens, while at the same time providing a lifeline for members of our collective community.

Following the screening, there will be a panel discussion, featuring:

Bilal Chatman, a subject from the film who served 11 years of a life sentence

Kari Galloway, Executive Director, Friends of Guest House

Robert Leggon, Vocational Opportunities, Training, Education and Employment (VOTEE) Division,

Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency (CSOSA)

Moderated by Josh Kraushaar, Political Editor, National Journal

The screening and panel will take place Thursday, June 15th at 6:30 at the Agudas Achim Congregation, 2908 Valley Drive, Alexandria, VA 22302. Tickets are free and can be reserved here: screening-and- discussion-tickets-33893399069.
