40+ Local Organizations to Host Block Party Celebrating Responsible Pet Ownership with Food Trucks, Children’s Entertainment, Interactive Demonstrations, & More

Alexandrians love their pets and this adoration continues to reach new heights with the City serving as home to an ever-growing number of pet businesses and services. In continued recognition of this, Mayor Allison Silberberg and the Alexandria City Council will proclaim April 29th as the second annual Alexandria Love Your Pet Day.

Local businesses will host a block party on Roth & Colvin Streets in the West End from 11am-2pm that day to celebrate this announcement. The kick-off will be held in the Wholistic Hound Academy parking lot at 18 Roth St (attendee parking in the Bishop Ireton lower lot directly across Duke St), hosted by local celebrity vet Dr. Katy Nelson. Attendees will then head along Roth & Colvin Streets to interact with 40+ local businesses and non-profits; children and leashed pets welcomed. Also in attendance will be two local elected representatives– VA Delegate Charniele Herring and VA State Senator Adam Ebbin–who are excited to talk with constituents and take part in this lively community event.

It is estimated that 65% of US households own pets, a number that continues to increase annually. This equates to approximately 44,000 homes in Alexandria, where it is estimated that one out of every four residents is a dog. Alexandria is ranked one of the most dog friendly towns on the East Coast according to and is home to 18 off-leash public dog parks and over 2,000 pet-friendly rooms in extended stay properties and hotels.

In such a pet-rich community, it’s important that people truly understand what it is to be a responsible pet owner. The block party will give attendees the opportunity to meet with organizations that focus on various aspects of responsible pet ownership; rescues that work to match a pet with home and lifestyle; trainers to offer techniques to ensure pets exhibit appropriate behavior; vendors of products and services that improve the life of pets, and more!

Kids can get a sense for responsible pet ownership by adopting a stuffed animal from the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria and taking it to different stops on the Block Party route for grooming, socialization vaccinations, etc. Dog owners can sign up to take the AKC Canine Good Citizen Test—a prerequisite for volunteering with many therapy groups—which is all about “responsible owners, well-mannered dogs.” Attendees can see how others have engaged their dogs in stimulating activities such as freestyle dance and agility. At each stop on the route, attendees can earn a stamp on their event map with the first 100 completed maps turned in for a gift bag full of goodies from participating businesses.
