After ten years in Clarendon, Cristian Velasco is moving his popular cafe, featuring homemade gelatos, empanadas, pastries, gelato shakes, and coffee to Del Ray. Immediately after the announcement, there was concern in the community that Del Ray Boccato may have ties to Killer ESP owner Robert Shelton.
"In response to the recent online discussion of a possible connection between Killer ESP and Boccato, I wanted to assure the community that Boccato has no relation to Killer EDP or its owner, Robert Shelton," said Del Ray Boccato owner Cristian Velasco. "Shortly after the initial Boccato location in Clarendon was created 10 years ago, Rob and I parted ways, due to difference in our business philosophy and approach. Since then, we have no relationship and have not been in contact." Velasco clarified the partnership dissolved before Killer ESP in Alexandria opened.
Del Ray Boccato is scheduled to open in August at 2400 Mount Vernon Avenue. "We have long wanted to have a Del Ray location," said Velasco. "Boccato has and always will be a shop that welcomes all people, and we look forward to welcoming you at our Del Ray location."
"We are thrilled to welcome another independent, local, and immigrant-owned small business to the Avenue," said Del Ray Business Association President Sue Kovalsky. "We're confident that Del Ray Boccato shares the Del Ray community's commitment to inclusion."
The Del Ray Business Association represents the independently-owned restaurants, retailers, and businesses in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, and hosts community events, including First Thursdays, Taste of Del Ray, The Del Ray Halloween Parade, The Alexandria Turkey Trot, and more.
