Photo by Wayne Hulehan     In the week since the three-alarm fire that occurred at Al’s Steak House on their grand reopening day, the Del Ray community has raised over $20,000 for the Breeding family during the rebuilding process, including $12,608.62 during a fundraiser organized by the Del Ray restaurant community.

On July 14, Holy Cow Del Ray transformed into Al’s Steak House Pop-up, featuring the chefs and owners from seven of Alexandria's top restaurants preparing and serving 420 of Al's signature steak-and-cheese sandwiches, which sold out within 90 minutes. "It's just incredible," said Del Ray Business Association President Bill Blackburn, of Holy Cow.  "It really shows how special Alexandria and Del Ray is. Real community spirit here, real heartwarming."

The pop-up fundraiser raised $12,608.62; another $7,400 was raised through GoFundMe. All proceeds from the fundraisers will go to the Breeding family, who remain committed to reopening Al's Steak House.  "We're in awe of all the community support, all the people who came out," said Al's Steak House owner Dorothy Breeding, who grew up in Del Ray. "I'm amazed."

A Del Ray institution, Al's Steak House closed in December 2015 after the death of John Severson, who took over the shop from its namesake in 1965. The Breeding family, longtime customers of Al's Steak House, purchased the restaurant, and worked with the Severson family to preserve the neighborhood landmark and its signature steak-and-cheese sandwiches.  Al's Steak House suffered a three-alarm fire just hours after reopening on July 6.

Eye2Eye Optometry Corner    Eye2eye Optometry Corner suffered severe smoke and particle damage in the 3 alarm fire at neighboring Al's Steakhouse last Wednesday. They have remained closed, except for prescription pick ups, since last Wednesday while undergoing a full restoration.

It has been a true team effort this past week, as eye2eye's hardworking staff has put in volunteer hours to help clean and taken unpaid time off to help ease the financial burden. Eye2eye would like to thank the community for their support - many neighbors have stopped in to show their support and ask about the restoration progress.

Owner, Dr. Dora Adamopoulos, hopes to have eye2eye Del Ray's doors open again next week, pending the completion of restoration work. Eye2eye Optometry Corner has a second Alexandria office, located in the Hilltop Village shopping center next to Wegmans at 6475 Old Beulah Street. Del Ray patients can schedule appointments there while eye2eye Del Ray is under restoration. Appointments can be booked through their website,

Below is a link to restoration updates from eye2eye. Eye2eye is grateful for the support of their community, the hard work of the first responders who put out the fire and are looking forward getting their doors open again soon.

To help prevent abuse and theft of medication and improperly disposed of drugs, The Neighborhood Pharmacy of Del Ray is partnering with the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office and the Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexandria to host a Drug Take Back event on Saturday, July 16 from 10am to 2pm.

The Drug Take Back event addresses a critical public safety and public health issue. According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. Many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away – both potential safety and health hazards.

Deputies will be outside the pharmacy collecting the drugs; the service is free and anonymous, with no questions asked.  Last year's event collected an estimated 150 lbs. of unused, expired, and unwanted medications.

The Neighborhood Pharmacy of Del Ray is located at  2204 Mt. Vernon Ave. in Alexandria.  For more information, call 703-836-1700.

Headlining this year's festival is Anthony Pirog, a winner of the Washington Area Music Association's Best Modern Rock Instrumentalist award. In an interview with Guitar Moderne, Andy Summers, the guitarist of The Police, recently said that Pirog is "one of my favorites at the moment."  The Washington Post has praised Pirog for his “fusion of talent and creativity," while Guitar Player Magazine named him a “Rising Artists You Must Hear."

         The main stage lineup:
